Seeking Stanzas: Poetic Storytelling in the World of STEAM

  • Lewis Latimer House Museum 34-41 137th Street Queens, NY, 11354 United States (map)

Join us for this family workshop that melds STEAM and Poetry!

In Seeking Stanzas, students will interact with a mixture of project-based, multi-media activities and discussions that meld the STEAM with poetry. How does STEAM show up in some of today’s poems? Is there space afforded to the sciences within a sonnet, sestina, or prose poem? Our featured artists will focus on the works of Tommy Pico, Franny Choi, Ross Gay, Morgan Parker, and other poets concerned with the notions of nature, artificial intelligence, and anthropology. The majority of artists will be black, brown, and poets of queer experience, with conversations around acceptance and cultural understandings woven into the workshop. Finally, students will write and construct their own poems, perform them in front of their peers, and create a digital representation of their poems through the free online coding program Scratch*.

*All materials will be provided by the museum and no previous experience with coding is needed.
