Virtual STEAM Workshop: Light Painting

Join us for a special program with Beam Center Youth Leaders. Learn the basics of Light Painting and create a DIY light painting at home!

The practice of Light Painting, or Light Drawing, dates back to the late 1880s and was initially used to track human motion. Light painting has since become a popular alternative photography method that can produce unique images. Using light sources at home, participants will learn to manipulate light to create unique works of art.

For this program you will need to download a free app either on your phone, computer or tablet.

Please have the following materials available:

  • Bring any light source you have (Flashlight, LEDs, etc) 
  • Download the free “Light Painting” app for iPhone or Android
  • For a laptop go to and download the free version of “Life Paint Live Mercury”
  • A dark room 

Ages 7 and above. Families welcome.
